Starting with a full-scale curriculum revision rooted in storytelling, social justice and intergenerational collaboration, we redeveloped and re-invigorated a children’s religious education program — and mobilized a volunteer corps of nearly 100 to support the achievement. It was our task to solicit and train these volunteers, and organize a rotating schedule to provide volunteer coverage for ten classes each week.
While environmental scientists demonstrated the impact of sedimentation on drinking water quality (as part of a clean water advocacy program), artists helped children craft pottery bowls in which to serve a simple meal (to raise funds to provide food for the hungry). We designed and implemented each weekly curriculum installment and made certain the right people were there to lead it. When asked the best thing about volunteering for the program, one volunteer was quite clear. “It was the children,” she said. “Nothing beats the look on a child’s face when they realize they’ve made a difference in the world.”
